So What Are Detox Waters?

chopped up pieces of fruit, vegetables and/or herbs added to water for a certain amount of time for the flavours to infuse out the ingredients and into the water it’s in. It’s said that this infused drinking water not only gains the flavours but also the health benefits of the ingredients you’re using and without the added calories from them.

The more of an ingredient you use, the stronger the flavour will become. You can leave the detox water in the fridge for 1 to 12 hours to allow the flavours to infuse more deeply but be sure to remove the ingredients after this time, otherwise they decompose and the water becomes too bitter.

Are Detox Waters Miracle Elixirs?

What if I told you that you can easily create a Detox Drink (or drinks) resulting in over 20 health benefits.

Sound to good to be true? The truth is these benefits are reached by drinking good ol’ fashioned plain water. But for some of us we battle to reach our daily water intake requirements, why is that and how can we change this?

I for one don’t drink enough water. Even with knowing all the above I still don’t get enough.  I don’t particularly get thirsty throughout the day and I don’t really enjoy the taste of water. I need to be consciously aware of drinking water for it to happen. The problem with this is that you’re dehydrate before realising it. Hydration is important for digestive health and maintaining regular bowel movements, chronic dehydration can cause constipation, which can make you bloated and feel sluggish. So if you’re like me and you need a little something more interesting to convince your dumb self to drink the stuff then go ahead and make these delicious detox waters. Or maybe you’re just looking for something interesting and cost effective to serve at your next lunch or dinner party.

The Equipment Needed:

You’ll want to store these waters in the right containers. I found these great fruit infused water bottles from Amazon. The nice thing about them is that the fruit is contained in a middle cylinnder seperate to the water making it easier to drink and clean when done.

Detox Water Recipes:

1. Lemon and Cucumber:

Cut up some lemons and cucumbers and place in a glass or jug or fruit infused water bottle.

Store in the refrigerator from 1 to 12 hours. Remove cucumber skins to reduce contamination and lemon rinds for bitterness if storing for longer periods of time.

About this Recipe:

This is the ultimate detox drink. Lemon has a whole host of health benefits and the cucumber gives a subtle but distinct flavor.

Lemon is said to help burn belly fat and curb appetite. Drinking first thing in the morning can help flush the digestive system and rehydrate the body.

Lemon also contains vitamin c so you’ll be giving yourself a bit of an immune boost at the same time.

2. Mango and Thyme:

Cut up some Mango and wash some thyme sprigs and place together in a glass or jug or fruit infused water bottle.

Store in the refrigerator for at least 1 to 12 hours. Serve cold.

About this Recipe:

Mango has high antioxidant properties that have been found to protect against cancers.

they are also great high fibre-fruits that keep one feeling full for longer. After finishing the water you may want to snack on a bit of the leftover mango peices to reap these benefits.

3. Strawberry and Mint:

Wash and cut up some strawberries and fresh mint leaves and place in a glass or jug or fruit infused water bottle.

Store in the refrigerator for at least 1 to 12 hours. For a more intense flavour bruise the fruit and tear up the leaves. Make sure to remove the fruit after a while before decomposition starts.

About this Recipe:

Strawberries are packed with vitamin c and high levels of antioxidants. They are fat-free, cholesterol free and low in calories.

Mint has been used for centuries to aid digestion and is often found in medicinal commercial products for indigestion.

When fresh mint is mixed with the sweet strawberries you’ll be blown away by it’s well-balanced refreshing taste.

4. Raspberries and Basil:

Wash some raspberries and fresh basil leaves and place in a glass or jug or fruit infused water bottle.

Store in the refrigerator for at least 1 to 12 hours. For a more intense flavour bruise the fruit and tear up the leaves. Make sure to remove the fruit after a while before decomposition starts.

About this Recipe:

As with the strawberries, raspberries are also packed with vitamin c and antioxidants and are low in calories. They also have anti- inflammatory properties.

Mixed with the basil to tone down the sweetness creates a great refreshing summer drink.

5. Grapefruit and Rosemary:

Cut up some Grapefruits and wash some fresh rosemary and place in a glass or jug or fruit infused water bottle.

Store in the refrigerator for at least 1 to 12 hours. Remove Grapefruit rinds if storing for longer periods of time to prevent bitterness from the pith.

About this Recipe:

Grapefruit has been associated with weight loss and used in diets for years. It is low in calories and high in fibre which helps lower blood sugar levels. The fruit will help fill you up so you’ll eat fewer calories at meals however these benefits are only experienced when eating the fruit because of its fibre content. After drinking your water snack on the leftover pieces or blitz the grapefruit (rind and pith removed first) with water and have as a smoothie for these benefits.

Rosemary has a very distinct taste and fragrant smell. You’ll only need a few sprigs to create a powerful taste explosion.

6. Apples, ACV & Sage:

Cut up some apples and add some apple cider vinegar, honey and sage into a glass or jug or fruit infused water bottle.

Store in the refrigerator for at least 1 to 12 hours and serve chilled.

Alternatively enjoy as a hot drink by steeping for 30 minutes before drinking.

About this Recipe:

There are so many wonderful benefits of drinking apple cider vinegar, even on a daily basis. Being a vinegar, and therefore acidic by nature, you’ll need to dilute it first to protect your oesophagus. Mixing it with some sweet honey and fresh sage balances out it’s pungent nature.

Here are a few important benefits of drinking ACV:
Aids in weight loss
Lowers heart disease risk
Acetic acid boost
Helps digestion, nutrient absorption and acid reflux
Balance body’s PH levels
Increases energy to muscles

Conclusion:

Detox waters are a great way to encourage us to drink more water since the addition of the extra ingredients makes for a more exciting drinking experience.

Detox water health claims can be mostly attributed to the water itself and not to the added ingredients. Some of these ingredients do have their own health benefits, especially when eaten whole. When added into water, for the most part, the nutrients are left behind with these ingredients! To gain the benefits of these ingredients and to decrease waste a good idea would be to blend the leftovers with some water, yoghurt and even vegetables to create healthy and great tasting smoothies.
